Anchored by artist-educator Shaw Pong Liu, renown artist-historian L’Merchie Frazier, elder midwife Dr. Jo-Anna Rorie, and artist/truthteller Zahirah Nur Truth, this summer celebration invites you to reflect on transformative birth experiences and make your own unique quilted square to add to a collective tapestry that will hang in Neighborhood Birth Center's future home.

Patchwork of Freedom: A Juneteenth Community Canvas Quilt Workshop for Youth @ New Art

honor of Juneteenth, youth artists will design a 2-foot by 3-foot mural composed of twelve 8x8 inch canvas squares. Drawing inspiration from Juneteenth history, African textile design, and oral storytelling, each teen will create an individual sketch that contributes to a larger collective image. The outlined mural will be displayed at a Juneteenth celebration on June 19 (see below), where community members will be invited to help bring the quilt to life by filling in each canvas square with color and meaning.

Join us for a relaxing evening of creativity and connection as we explore the balance between abstraction and the illusion of form in watercolor painting. Inspired by the work of Zahirah Nur Truth of ZNT Arts, this two-hour paint night encourages fluid mark-making, expressive contour drawing, and layering techniques in a supportive, no-pressure environment. Whether you're a beginner or experienced artist, you'll experiment with wet-on-wet watercolor, color mixing, and dynamic line work to create unique, expressive compositions.

Participants will learn the following:

  • Abstraction & Form: Balancing fluidity with structure through contour and outline drawing

  • Wet-on-Wet Techniques: Letting color blend organically to create depth and movement

  • Illusion of Form: Suggesting figures and objects through negative space and layering

  • Expressive Line Work: Using gestural strokes to add rhythm and energy to your piece

  • Color Mixing & Theory: Creating mood and contrast through intentional palettes

ZNT Arts @ Arlington Community Education : Family Crystal Wire Wrapped Jewelry Workshop

Join local artist Zahirah Truth, ZNT Arts, Create your very own unique wire-wrapped jewelry or mini sculpture. Learn about the properties of a wide variety of beautiful semi-precious stones and crystals. Then pick your favorite and create a wearable pendant or ring; a pendulum to tap into the energetic connection between you, the earth, and the cosmos (or to hypnotize your friends!); or a decorative mini sculpture of your own design. Ages 8+

Celebrate Black history and affirm identity while creating an embroidered craft to take home!

In this workshop, kids will learn about the importance of celebrating Black history and affirming each other's identities, as well as discuss works of African American art that use quilting, sewing, and embroidery techniques. At the end of the workshop, participants will bring home their own embroidered work of art showcasing their chosen word of affirmation!
