Sewing for Justice Fiber Arts and Activism Workshop with ZNT Arts @ New Art Center

Sewing for Justice is an embroidery also known as hand sewing workshop that uses this traditional medium utilizing text and images to uplift, acknowledge personal experiences and world observations. In this workshop, students will learn about current contemporary artists and activists, and create a project of their own using fiber arts and the guidance of Zahirah Nur Truth. Basic sewing skills are helpful but will be taught as well as embroidery stitch techniques. New Art Center will provide all supplies, but students can bring in their own fiber arts materials as well.

Curator Amanda Shea is asking the artists to embody what makes them feel grounded in their creation and showcase how this sense of safety, security, and secrecy influences their artistic expression.

#HellaBlack is an interdisciplinary event of live performances BCA organizes each year to celebrate the depth of Black artistry and amplify the voices of rising Black and brown artists in Boston. For the first time ever, the event will be in the historic Cyclorama!

Zahirah Nur Truth of ZNT Arts guest artist will be joining Lynn Museum during February Vacation for Black History Month 2024 fun interactive hand sewing workshop “The Pieces of Me”.

We will learn about the history of sewing, quilting and patch work through the African Diaspora and talk about how hand sewing was used to tell stories, pass on knowledge and share feelings.

Participants of all ages will observe basic sewing techniques and develop their own beautiful stories through art.
